On April 27th, 1944, an 8th Air Force B-17 piloted by Lt. W. C. Shaddix was hit by anti-aircraft fire over Belgium. Shaddix and his crew bailed out of their crippled bomber and Shaddix alone was able to elude capture by the German Army. The rest of his crew spent the war in German Pow camps. Shaddix was hidden and protected by the Belgian underground who passed him along from family to family. While trying to make his way to neutral Spain along with another downed pilot, Shaddix was picked up by the French Underground who were fighting a guerilla war in the Ardennes Forest. He joined them in their battle against the retreating German Army. Finally their unit was swept up by Patton's 3rd Army as it raced across Europe. Drawing on interviews, diaries, and recently declassified documents, author Tom Bartlett, a former Air Force officer, traces the remarkable story of the training, survival, and return of a downed Air Force pilot.

Fallen Fortress Tom Bartlett 9780578151274 Books Reviews
This is a story worth telling but not in the manner in which it was told. Too much non-essential historical filler. IMO this was simply padding to the book.
A carefully researched and engrossing account of flying, escape and eagerness to return to the conflict. A true, compelling memorial.
Superbly written book about the experiences of a WWII B17 crew that will hold your attention and take you on many unexpected turns. It's entertaining and well documented and tells an incredible tale of aerial war, spies, prison camps, guerilla warfare-this book has it all.
My Father in Law, Denny Naar was a B 17 pilot with the 8th Air Force flying missions over Germany. Reading biographies like this one reminds me of the stories he would tell. This is well written and very interesting for air war junkie like me.
I enjoyed the over view of being shot down, evading the enemy, the POW experiences and finally being sent back to the US only to return to England.
An interesting account of a B-17 crew during their training and their introduction to combat. A must-read for anyone interested in the 8th Airforce, combat over Europe and the escape routes used by some lucky airmen.
My father in law was with 8 th in England . Had friends that flew in B 17's . I want to understand what they went though , training , and living in a strange country . I believe that Fallen Fortess gave me that in spades . Could not put it down . Liked the way you are led in to the story in such a way, that you want to know how the pilot got in such a fix .
